The Gibson on Books Sci-Fi Award celebrates the most thought-provoking and boundary-pushing works of science fiction – stories that continue to inspire curiosity, debate, and the occasional existential crisis. This isn’t a corporate-sponsored gong or a committee-driven compromise. It’s a recognition of the books that still make readers stop and think long after the last page.
Chosen by Andrew G. Gibson, curator of the Incredible Science Fiction: Amazing Tales from the 1950s and Beyond series and host of the Gibson on Books YouTube channel, this award highlights stories that define what science fiction can be at its best: bold, humane, and full of dangerous ideas.

How the Award Works
There are no applications, no entry fees, and no panels full of publishing bureaucrats. Each year, one book (sometimes classic, sometimes modern) is chosen purely on merit and impact. The only criterion is that it must make the reader see the world a little differently.
The winner receives nothing tangible – no cheque, no dinner, and certainly no speech – only the dubious honour of having their cover displayed with the official Gibson on Books Sci-Fi Award emblem and the knowledge that their story left a lasting mark on the imagination.
Past Winners
2025 – The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov

About the Award
The Gibson on Books Sci-Fi Award is a personal project, created for the sheer enjoyment of celebrating great writing. It’s not affiliated with any organisation, foundation, or institution. It simply reflects one man’s lifelong obsession with science fiction that dares to ask big questions – and occasionally break the rules while doing it.
While there are no submission requirements, publishers and authors are welcome to send digital review copies for consideration.
If a publisher or author wants to show off their win, that’s entirely encouraged. The digital award badge can be displayed freely on book covers, websites, or social media with a link back to the official page.
Publishers and authors are welcome to send review copies for consideration. Digital editions can be sent to [email protected]. Submission does not guarantee inclusion or an award, but every book will be given the time and curiosity it deserves.
